Definitions
The simplest definition is "A way to push audio/video content from the web to the consumer (student)." It's any combination of software and hardware that permits automatic downloading of audio and video files for the listening of the student's convenience. You can put rich media (audio and/or video) on the web without creating podcasts.

Advantages
- Recorded lectures allow students to listen again or to catch up if they miss class.
- Faculty have not seen large drops in attendance when lectures are put online.
- In fully online classes, can give a better sense of who the instructor is. May make online class more like a face-to-face class, which depending on the person may be an advantage or not.
- Students can subscribe to the podcast and don't have to wonder when the next one is available.
- With iTunesU, you can restrict podcasts just to your enrolled students.
- With iTunesU, you can also make your materials publicly available.
- Students can listen to the materials where over they want. (Although anecdotally, it appears that students mostly listens on their computer, not moving around with an iPod.)
[edit]
Disadvantages
- Students may not have iPods or may not have video iPods, though students without an iPod can still listen to podcasts from their personal computer or a lab computer.
- It takes time to create a podcast.
- Students on dialup may have difficulty downloading large size or large numbers of podcasts. Such students have requested materials on CD instead.
