Examples in UW System

Nany Coma UW-Baraboo/Sauk County: 5th semester Spanish: Intermediate Composition and Conversation: Students created audio and video podcasts of plays, stories, etc., in Spanish. Students heard themselves and other speak Spanish and gave opportunity for them to critique each other.

David Allen, media law class: Created podcasts of classroom lectures synched with Powerpoint. Highly motivated students used podcasts to reinforce learning, listening to them after attending lecture. Gave out more ABs and As than ever before. Less motived students who often missed class used podcasts as a crutch, skilling class and listening just before exams. Gave our more Ds and Fs than before.

Robert Hoar UW La Crosse Mathematics: Calculus: Used Camtasia and a tablet PC and wrote out math equations and steps. So you could watch and listen to him solving them. Small but completely workable on a video iPod. Used to show solutions to quiz questions, 4-5 per week. Did complete voice alouds for process, spending 2-3x as long describing it as he would expect a student to typically actually spend doing the problem. Students found it easy to fast forward through the parts of the solution they understood. Recommending not referencing class in the podcast so that they could easily be used in future semesters.

Mark Berres Madison Ornithology: 137 birdcalls, which students need to memorize. Students bring iPods along on weekly fieldtrips. The enhanced podcast includes a photograph of the bird along with the call. Has progressed from tapes to CD to podcast; each new technology has allowed him to increase the number of birds and birdcalls the students must recognize. Students found the iPod shuffle feature very valuable for self-testing. Next step is to have video of the birds, although this is difficult to get for many birds.

Katy Culver Madison Journalism: "Writing coach"--used screen capture software while editing a sample student paper and recording her audio commentary. She doesn't just show corrections but explains why these corrections are necessary--something students don't usually get when comments are simply on paper. Students found these podcasts helped bridge the gap in a large class, creating a more personal connection with the instructor.

UW Colleges Coursecasting. Those with locks are restricted to course enrollees. There are also some lecture series available.
