My Blog: Audiovisual Diary

 spaceholder for this column

I used to teach a summer workshop for kids on Astronomy. Here are some of the materials.

A scale model of the solar system (60K). An Adobe Acrobat file (.pdf). The scale used is 1 foot to half a million miles. The distances are plotted in reference to the UW Oshkosh campus, but the actual measurements are included. The sun can be cut out of paper and for the planets I use beads and foam balls from hobby stores.

Do you have a 12 inch earth globe? A baseball held 30 feet away from the globe is at about the right scale for the size and distance of the moon. (Actually a baseball is just slightly too small.) Click here to download an Acrobat file with a picture of the moon at the right scale. (96K)

Scale of the summer triangle.(348K) A PowerPoint Show. Looking at the sky, all the stars seem to be at the same distance. This sequence illustrates the actual distances of three prominent stars.

Two Orion stories. (108K) An Adobe Acrobat file (.pdf). The handout that went along with a winter planetarium show.

My favorite site for Astronomy information is Sky and Telescope

The handouts are in Adobe Acrobat format. You will need to download and install the Adobe Acrobat Reader in order to read them. You can download it free from Adobe.
