There are five grade types available in D2L. The grade type is selected when creating an item. The vast majority of users only select Numeric.

  • Numeric: The most common column type is numeric. Use this type to manually control the number of points a student receives (for example, 8/10 or 75/100).
  • Checkbox: Use the checkbox type if you wish to give students either full or no credit. Note that for a 0 to appear in the gradebook, the checkbox must be selected and then unselected.
  • Selectbox: When a special grade scheme is created, such as letter grades, the selectbox provides a dropdown menu of the available options. Note that the selected item is added into the final grade based on the lowest percentage listed in the grade scheme for that item.
  • Text: A text type of grade item allows you to enter text for students to view. Text column types are not included in grade calculations. Text grades cannot be exported or imported.
  • Calculated: The calculated column type lets you select a number of existing grade items to calculate a running total of students scores. This is useful for showing students how they are doing within a type of item, such as quizzes, assignments, or tests. Calculated columns are not counted towards the final grade since the individual items are already included.
