What if I'm using Windows XP and can't download files

From D2L Wiki

Internet Explorer (WinXP Service Pack 2) blocks downloads of documents, PowerPoints, etc.

If you click on a link in a web page to open a Word document, PowerPoint, PDF or any other non-HTML file type, Internet Explorer may block the download if you have applied Windows XP Service Pack 2. The user may see the information bar appear or may just report that the file does not open and they get a blank screen.

Cause

This is a feature in Internet Explorer designed for security purposes to prevent users from downloading files which may harm their systems. Unfortunately, it also causes problems on many web pages, including D2L.

Resolution

You can set Internet Explorer to prompt them to open or save a file instead of just blocking it. It is important that you understand this may lessen your security and you should never download a file when you do not know what it is. To be prompted for file downloads, follow these steps:

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. From the Tools menu, choose Internet Options...
    IE Tools menu
  3. In the Internet Options dialog box, select the Security tab and then select the CUSTOM button.
  4. Scroll down the list of custom security options to the Downloads section.
    Downloads setting menu
  5. Under "Automatic prompting for the downloads", choose Enable.
  6. Select OK on the custom settings box and then OK again on Internet Options to close the dialog box.
  7. Exit and restart Internet Explorer. The next time you select on a link to a file, you should be prompted to open or save the file. Select OPEN to open it inside of the web page or in the program or SAVE to save it to your computer. It is recommended that you always have IE ask before opening a file for security reasons.
