How do I import grades from a ScanTron (Testing Center) file
From D2L Wiki
First, you need to request an Excel file of the test results. They will send it in email. Download and open it in Excel, then follow these steps.
| Your file looks something like this: (All TitanIDs have been changed in these examples.) | ||
| Remove unnecessary columns--last_name, first_name, initial, code, phone, total, grade, and any other columns that appear in your file. You want to retain the columns for student_id and the test you want to import into D2L. To delete a column, select it by clicking on the letter (B, C, etc.), go to Edit: Delete or use the right-mouse button and choose delete. | ||
| Change student_id to OrgDefinedID (you must be exact, including capitalization). Change the column heading for the grade item to the full name of your grade item as it appears in D2L followed by Points Grade (you must be exact, including capitalization and spacing. Haven't created any items? See How do I add an item to the gradebook.), such as ‘’’Quiz #1 Points Grade’’’. To find the full name of your item in D2L, go to the Gradebook: Manage grades. You must use the full name, not the short name. The last column must be labeled End-of-Line Indicator and have a # on every line. If you export your gradebook, you can simply copy this column into the file from the Testing Center file. (You probably won't want to use the exported file because unless you import it properly, Excel will strip the leading 0s from the Student IDs.) | ||
|
Save your revised file as an Excel spreadsheet; I recommend changing the name so you don't overwrite the original file from Testing. Then, save your file as a CSV (Comma delimited). Go to File: Save As. On the PC, at the bottom of the Save as window, change Save as type: to CSV (Comma delimited). On the Mac, do not choose the first CSV type; scroll further down to choose CSV (Windows).You may wish to change the name of your file so that you can tell at a glance the difference between the original Excel file and this changed file for D2L. Save. You will get messages warning you that some features of Excel aren't compatible with CSV. Say Yes to the message. If you find you need to make changes to your file, do not re-open the .CSV file (editing it already open is fine); go back to your saved Excel version, edit, and re-save as .CSV. | PC | |
| Mac | ||
| Go to your D2L course and enter Grades. | ||
| Select the icon across the top of the Grades area to Import/Export. | ||
| At the bottom of the page, browse to find your file. Be sure to select the .csv file, not the .xls file. Select Next. | ||
| After processing, if there are any errors, this will be displayed. In the example, an incorrect StudentID was provided by the first listed student. If a student has put the wrong ID on the ScanTron sheet, their ID will not be recognized. (You may wish to make a note of these errors and manually look them up in your original Testing Center file. The file lists student names (provided those were entered correctly on their sheet) and you can fix and re-import or manually enter that grade later.) The second error is due to blank lines in the files; it can be ignored. | ||
| You will get a preview of the grades. Select Import in the lower right. You will get a preview of the first students (up to 100). It does not matter what order the file is in--it may be alphabetical by name or ID or unordered. D2L simply matches IDs from the file to the enrollment list. | ||
| After processing, you will be returned to the grade page. (The information displayed will depend upon how you setup the display options. You may see less information in the gradebook than in this example.) | ||
