Grading discussion assignments

Note: In 8.3, D2L allows you to grade discussions within the discussion topic. Note that only one topic can be associated with a particular grade item. Therefore, grading small group discussions will require a separate grade item for each small group.

Set topic properties for assessment

1. When creating the topic or when editing it, select the tab Assessment.
2. Choose the grade item from the dropdown list or create a new grade item.
3. Enter the out of score.
4. Choose whether to assess every message and the calculation method. Choose whether unscored messages will be counted as 0.
   1. If you choose to assess every message, you will enter a score on every posted message. If you do not choose this, you will only enter a grade for the entire discussion topic.

Assess messages

1. To grade a message or an entire topic: When reading a message, select the Assess button in the upper left, just above the message text. In the popup window, enter the message's grade or the topic's grade (depending on your scoring method).
2. To see overall grades, from the topic properties, select the topic's edit icon and select Assess Topic at the upper right.
