  1. From the main Grades page, select image:managegrades.gif Manage Grades in the left hand menu.
  2. Select image:gradesnewitem.gif New Item at the top.
  3. Select a grade type. There are five grade types; most people use the numeric type. The following information is for that type.
  4. In the General section
    1. Name: Enter a Name for the grade item. This will display to the students. Enter a Short Name which will display only to you if your Name is long.
    2. Category: You can change the category here, or create a new category. The use of categories is not recommended unless you want to distribute weight evenly across child items or wish to drop the lowest grade(s).
    3. Show Description: Select this link to get the description text box. You can choose whether to display this information to your students.
  5. In the Grading section:
    1. Max Points: Enter the number of points you wish this grade item to be worth. Enter whatever the total is that you grade out of on this item (out of 15, out of 100, out of 50, etc.).
    2. (If using a weighted system) Weight: Enter the percentage of the final grade this item is worth.
    3. Can Exceed: If this is not an extra credit item, but you offer extra credit points (so that a student could receive more than 100%), check this box. If not selected, you will get an error message if you try to give a student more than the possible number of available points.
    4. Bonus: Select if this is an extra credit item. (If using a weighted system, extra credit items must have a weight, so that the gradebook knows their relative weight to the final grade, just like any other grade item.)
    5. Grade Scheme: If you have created any additional grade schemes, you may apply them to a grade item using this dropdown menu. If you have already selected a course scheme, it is automatically applied.
  6. Select Show Display Options to change the display of class average and grade distribution or to override default display options from Grades Settings.
  7. Select Save at the top or bottom right. Select Save and New to skip steps and get to the grade item type page (step 3 above).
